Recognize When to Power Down

Technology has become an integral part of our everyday lives. We use it to work, learn, connect with others, exercise, and ease the burden of daily chores and activities.

Despite its benefits, and there are many, technology can also prevent us from being fully present in the moment and practicing mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the ability to fully experience the present moment, and more specifically, accept one’s feelings and thoughts as a normal part of
our everyday experience.

Many of us think we need to plan ahead and make time for mindfulness meditation when in fact all we need is to unplug and focus on the simple experiences of daily life.

Here are 7 easy ways to snack on a moment of mindfulness:

  1. Put away your device and take a minute to notice your breathing – this is the foundation of mindfulness. Repeat various times throughout the day.
  2. Step away from your desk. Even simple stretches or walking can wake up your senses.
  3. When going for a jog, leave the earbuds at home. Listen to the sounds of nature and immerse yourself in your surroundings.
  4. Set reminders to take a break from your phone. Five minutes without your device can easily become an hour engaging in other rewarding activities.
  5. Spend time with family, friends, your pet, or even just yourself, without technology. Fewer distractions can help you make the most of these moments.
  6. Playing music can help you focus and enhance your creativity. Who knows, you could unleash your inner Mozart or Johnny Cash.
  7. Read an actual book and transport your mind to another world.

Just like you grab a snack to maintain your energy throughout the day, munching on some mindfulness can help you grow your ability to regulate your feelings, and fight stress, anxiety,
and depression.

Put down your screen and take a moment to enjoy life through your own senses.
