Dülmen Event Creates Bonds, Promotes Awareness

Community members gathered for a SAFER Challenge and chili cook-off at Tower Barracks in Dülmen, Germany, an event that brought together multiple agencies to educate service members and their Families about sexual harassment and sexual assault. Participating organizations included the Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) program, the Army Substance Abuse Program, the Family Advocacy Program and the Exceptional Family Member Program.

88th Readiness Division Victim Advocate, Creating an Environment of Trust, Respect

Last October, Sgt. 1st Class Betsy Buckmaster, 88th Readiness Division, became the new Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention (SHARP) victim advocate. Buckmaster, who joined the Army Reserve in 1986, started SHARP victim advocate collateral duties in 2010 while she was a band member. Taking on the role of victim advocate, Buckmaster says, has allowed her to be the “best version of myself when helping others.”

New Center a ‘Seismic Shift’ in Army Fitness

The Drill Sergeant Timothy Kay Soldier Performance Readiness Center “represents a seismic shift” in how the Army approaches the training, evaluation and sustainment of its forces, according to Brig. Gen. Jason E. Kelly, Fort Jackson’s commander. “It is an investment in individual Soldier preparedness.” Soldiers and civilians can go to the center for aid from counselors, athletic trainers, occupational therapists, nutritionists and other specialists.

Military Psychologist Talks Facts, Prevention of Substance, Alcohol Misuse Among Service Members

New Directive Exempts Soldiers Who Score 540+ on the ACFT From Body Fat Assessment

The U.S. Army has released a directive exempting all Soldiers scoring 540 points or more on the Army Combat Fitness Test from the body fat assessment, regardless of their height and weight. Soldiers must score 80 points or more in each event.

Department of Defense Releases Annual Report on Sexual Harassment and Violence at the Military Service Academies, Academic Program Year 2021–2022

Congress requires that the DOD submit an annual report for each academic program year (APY) on the effectiveness of military service academy policies, training and procedures for sexual harassment and sexual violence involving academy personnel at the United States Military Academy, United States Naval Academy and United States Air Force Academy. The latest report also includes updates on the DOD’s efforts to prevent and respond to sexual assault throughout APY 2021–2022.

DOD Hopes to Raise Awareness About Dangers of Fentanyl

Overdose deaths from drugs, including illicit drugs and prescription opioids, are a public health problem that harms countless communities and families. According to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), drug poisonings are the leading killer of Americans between the ages of 18 and 45. A newer street drug flagged by the DEA is rainbow fentanyl, a brightly colored powdered version of the toxic opioid that is highly appealing and deadly. The Defense Department wants to raise awareness of this health crisis in order to sharply decrease the many daily fatal overdoses.

‘Griffin Grit’ Workout at Beach Caps 229th MI Bn. Resiliency Class

After six weeks of classroom training on resiliency, Soldiers assigned to the 229th Military Intelligence Battalion hit Carmel Beach for a workout. The event, Griffin Grit, is the capstone to Griffin Mindset, a chaplain-led class that teaches Soldiers how to build resiliency. The 40-minute workout had Soldiers in and out of the water, up and down the dunes and back and forth across the beach as the late-afternoon sun began to set behind the ocean. By the end, participants used words such as “great,” “fun” and “fantastic” to describe the experience.

Master Resilience Trainer - Performance Experts Kourtney Sappenfield, Chris McCalmont and Colin Klaber from the Fort Bliss, Texas, Ready and Resilient Performance Center hosted a team-building performance PT for 1-501st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion to emphasize how pilots and crew chiefs can better learn, understand and appreciate one another’s roles within their teams. Both pilots and crew chiefs are necessary for flight mission success, yet often these roles are not mutually understood, which can affect stress levels and unit cohesion.

There’s no doubt the Army is focused on making its workforce more diverse in race, gender and ethnicity. Case in point: In 2021 the U.S. Army Recruiting Command established the Diversity Outreach and Inclusion Team, whose purpose is to increase the numbers of women and people of different ethnicities within the ranks.
